On September 6 & 7 and September 13 & 14, from Noon to 5:00PM, Orleans Homebuilders’ communities will be manning lemonade stands to support Alex’s Lemonade Stands for Childhood Cancer. Orleans communities in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Orange County, NY; Chicago, IL; North & South Carolina and Florida will participate. Orleans Homebuilders will match all contributions collected on these days.
Alex's Lemonade Stand for Childhood Cancer was founded by a young cancer patient named Alexandra "Alex" Scott. Two days before her 1st birthday, Alex was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of childhood cancer. In the year 2000, when Alex was just four years old, she told her parents that she wanted to have a lemonade stand in her front yard. She surprised everyone when she announced her plan – to donate the money from her stand to "her hospital" to help doctors find a cure for all kids with cancer. Every year, on a warm Saturday, Alex held a lemonade stand to benefit childhood cancer research. Alex's courageous battle with cancer and her determination to help all kids with cancer inspired others to help her cause. Donations have poured in from around the world and millions of dollars have been raised for pediatric cancer research! Beautiful, spirited Alex passed away on August 1, 2004 at the age of 8. Her boundless optimism and commitment to helping other children will continue through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer.
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is unique in its approach to providing grants. We partner with the staff at top childhood cancer centers across the country. Together, we identify the specific ways in which we can make a difference for children who need new cancer treatments—and who need these options today, not tomorrow.
Since Alex held her first stand, Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised over $20 million towards fulfilling her dream of finding a cure. Orleans Homebuilders is celebrating its 90th Anniversary this year. Throughout its history, the Company has taken an active role in supporting the communities in which they build and live. This is a very worthwhile cause and we are proud to be involved with and support this research," stated Jeffrey P. Orleans, third generation, CEO and Chairman of the Board. "It is our hope that through this research the need for Alex's Lemonade Stands will be eliminated in the very near future."
